Knowing What Needs To Be Known

Today's verse is 1 Samuel 17:40
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.

Why did David pick up five stones? Nothing here in the immediate passage tells us. Much later, near what appears to be near the end of David’s reign, we are told that David or one of his servants kills Goliath’s brothers, which including Goliath totaled five. One must ask, how did David know this? There are a number of ways, the most likely was that as Goliath went out to defy Israel each day, his brothers as bullies do, were first and forefront where all could see them as Goliath presented his challenge. So what should we learn of this? Both in the Old and in the New testaments Vigilance is regarded as a virtue, that is, knowing what is important to know in the world about you. Knowing what the issues are, knowing what the threats to the Kingdom of God are, and being prepared to face them, not in one’s own strength, but by walking boldly side by side with your Savior. Much is happening today, even to at least the partial fulfillment of scripture which indicates the fulfillment of God’s promise of Judgment of the ungodly. How should you prepare? How should you take action? Selah [Think on these things.] Amen.
