The Right Response To Chastening

 

Today's verse is Hebrews 12:6

     For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 

    There are those when they hear of the doctrine “Once saved always saved” they mock and suppose that once Saved we are free to do as we will, remaining in our sin with impunity. As we see in this verse, this is not so, for when we sin, God sees, and is displeased, for he can have no part in sin. Have we not been warned: Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. As children of God by the virtue of receiving the One God had sent, this law is fulfilled by our chastening. Therefore, when we are chastened, let us not complain, but repent, and remember that we expect our Saviour to return, and as we hope in this, let us purify ourselves even as he is pure. And as we work out our Salvation with fear and trembling, Remember that it is God which worketh in you both to will and do of his good pleasure. Amen.
