Receiving Christ's Messenger

 

Today's verse is John 13:20

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

    Now, I believe that Jesus is speaking primarily of the Comforter here, who he has sent to us after he had Ascended to the Father. Yet, the language also allows for another interpretation. For Jesus also calls men to be shepherds of his flock (Pastors) whom he has called out of us, his flock, to feed his sheep, to help bring us to that same mind that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are to receive them even as we receive our Lord Jesus, not blindly, but testing their teachings by his Word, and as we find them faithful, we are to receive them even as we would receive Jesus Christ in our midst. Let us, therefore, obey these that have been given the oversight (Bishop) of us, even as we would obey our Savior. Do they not have to give an account to him that is faithful, for what they teach. Amen.
