Gaining Eternal Life

Today's Verse is Matthew 19:17
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

The question was, “what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” Pay attention to the answer, for it is subtle. First, Does the Master deny being good? Nay, rather, there is a subtle claim of his divine nature here. Next, he makes an appeal for obeying the Law, which if we were able, we could be called good. But there is none good but God! However, pay attention to the commandments he leaves out; those that are focused upon God, all that fall under the greatest command: To Love God with all thy might etc. and he leaves out covetousness as well, which we later learn is likened to Idolatry. Paul has also claimed to be able to keep these things, but covetousness destroyed him even as it did this young rich man. So, who or what is Lord over your life? Have you confessed that Jesus Christ is Lord, or do you reserve space for another? Do you believe in your heart that God hath raised Christ from the dead that you might walk in newness of life? These are the lessons our Saviour has challenged this young man to learn. Amen.

To God be the Glory
