Today's verse is Jeremiah 10:23-24
O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself:
It is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.
O LORD, correct me, but with judgment;
Not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.
We have already seen in another place:
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart;
And lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him,
And he shall direct thy paths.
And so now we see why we are not to lean unto our own understanding. We could say that these two passages teach the same thing. We are not to trust our first impulse, on what we ought to do, but as the prophet requests here, we must ask for God's correction, for our God's direction in our lives. And if we ignore him, and he must respond in anger, what will we have left? Let us never forget who we are, and what he has done for us because of that. And for that reason alone trust in him and the direction that he has promised.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart;
