Solomon's Grievous Reign?

Today's Verse is 1 Kings 12:4
Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

If Solomon ruled with wisdom, and happy were his servants, and he brought wealth, prosperity even, to the Kingdom, why did the people count their service to him grievous? Looking at the counsel of the old men, they reminded Rehoboam, that even as the people served him, he was to serve them. It would seem apparent, that as Solomon forgot God as he sought to please his wives, that he sought also to please himself and use his power to obtain his own ends (contrary to God’s commands) and left off the balance of Judgment, Justice, and Mercy. Therefore, let us remember to find out what this meaneth: I will have mercy, and not sacrifice for as Christ has said, understanding this we will not condemn the guiltless. Selah [Consider these things.] Amen.
